This salvation is once for all (only once) \"delivered to the saints.\" It is a prize which will be held out to view but ",[17,208,209],{},"once;"," that is, in only ",[17,212,213],{},"one age;"," there is no \"second chance\" for it; only once can it be earnestly contended for. This is the salvation which Paul meant when he said to Timothy: \"Therefore we both labor and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men (to natural life the ",[17,216,205],{}," salvation), ",[17,219,220],{},"specially"," of those that believe.\" ",[17,223,224],{},"1 Tim. 4:10",[13,226,227,228,231,232,234,235,237,238,241,242,245,246,249],{},"In this statement we understand that a general and a ",[17,229,230],{},"special"," salvation are referred to, and the ",[17,233,230],{}," is ",[17,236,99],{}," salvation\" to which he was calling the attention of \"whosoever among you feareth God.\" By \"this salvation\" \"all that believe are justified from ",[17,239,240],{},"all things"," from which they could ",[17,243,244],{},"not"," be justified by the law of Moses.\" (",[17,247,248],{},"39th ver",".)",[13,251,252],{},"This must have been good news to a people apprehensive of evil because of their shortcomings under the law, and at this point they must have been getting anxious to hear what Paul had to say further on the subject. Is it possible that \"this salvation\" is of such a character that the wisdom of their wise men fails to comprehend it? And cannot the understanding of their prudent men grasp it? No, indeed, it ",[17,332,333],{},"cannot;"," IT is (for the present) THE \"stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offense to ",[17,336,337],{},"both"," the houses of Israel.\"—",[17,340,341],{},"Isaiah 8:14",". And the failure of their wise men to see (recognize) this, and the ",[17,344,133],{}," of the work itself, are ",[17,347,348],{},"facts,"," which Paul said they would not believe, though a man should ",[17,351,352],{},"declare"," it unto them. It is a pretty hard matter to conclude that the wisdom of their ",[17,355,356],{},"wise"," men has wandered so far from the truth that their counsel amounts to nothing, and is perished; but that is what the prophet said ",[17,359,360],{},"would"," come to pass at a future time, and is what Paul gave them to understand was imminent ",[17,363,364],{},"then,"," and is what we understand to have taken place in its full import ",[17,367,368],{},"now."," The wisdom of their wise men ",[17,371,372],{},"has"," perished, and the ",[17,375,322],{}," of their prudent men ",[17,378,379],{},"is"," hid.",[13,382,383,386,387,390,391,394,395,398,399,402,403,406,407,410,411,414,415,418,419,422],{},[17,384,385],{},"Wherein?"," does some one ask. In that their conclusions and teaching make ",[17,388,389],{},"confusion"," of His Word, and ",[17,392,393],{},"imply"," a ",[17,396,397],{},"failure"," of God's designs or ",[17,400,401],{},"\"plan.\""," They allow that God provided for the salvation of ",[17,404,405],{},"all"," men; that is, he planned to accomplish that, but the subtlety of the enemy and the perversity of man were ",[17,408,409],{},"so great"," that his purpose is but ",[17,412,413],{},"partly"," accomplished; that is to say, that only a few will receive ",[17,416,417],{},"any"," benefit from the death of Christ. That though Christ came to \"destroy the works of the devil,\" yet demons and lost spirits will forever exist in ",[17,420,421],{},"conscious misery,"," and that it is imprudent to teach otherwise. Is this not equivalent to saying that the plan of God fails of accomplishment; and is it not a confirmation of the prophetic statement that \"the wisdom of your wise men shall perish?\"",[13,424,425,426,429,430,433,434,437],{},"The word teaches that \"in the last days\" (of this age) \"evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse\" (",[17,427,428],{},"2 Tim. 3:1,13","); but their wise men tell us the world is growing better and better, and yet a late secular paper of some note said that crimes were ",[17,431,432],{},"becoming"," so frequent that they, in their weekly issue, could only make a ",[17,435,436],{},"statement"," of them, not having room for particulars.",[13,439,440,441,444,445,448,449,451,452,455,456,20],{},"It is a ",[17,442,443],{},"fact,"," not an ",[17,446,447],{},"assumption,"," but a solemn fact, that we are ",[17,450,286],{}," living in a time when crime and ",[17,453,454],{},"corruption"," have assumed prodigious proportions, not only in the lower grades of society, but in what are called the upper grades. Even all the machinery of church and state seems to be so rotten that many are exclaiming, without knowing that their utterances are the fulfillment of the spirit of prophecy: \"I don't know what we are coming to!\" Thus already their hearts are beginning to \"fail them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.\" ",[17,457,458],{},"Luke 21:26",[13,460,461,462,465,466,469,470,473,474,477,478,481,482,485],{},"No sane man to-day, unless he is trying to sustain a creed, fails to see (recognize) that thrones stand unsteady, and that throughout the world there is a feeling of ",[17,463,464],{},"distrust"," among all classes; there is ",[17,467,468],{},"\"perplexity.\""," ",[17,471,472],{},"Luke 21:25",". We told him we thought ",[17,504,505],{},"if"," so it should read in the last clause of the verse \"and they shall learn war ",[17,508,509],{},"more and more\""," instead of ",[17,512,513],{},"\"no"," more,\" for earth trembles with the thunder of cannon and shock of contending armies, and millions fall in this lake of fire and brimstone. Wonderful improvements in instruments of death are frequent. ",[17,516,517],{},"\"Prepare"," war\" (",[17,520,521],{},"Joel 3:9,10",") is the prophecy to apply ",[17,524,501],{}," and is beginning to have its fulfillment, but the understanding of the \"prudent\" (?) men does not discern it. It is a fact which the spiritually minded plainly see, that the portion of prophecy which is having and is about ",[17,527,528],{},"to"," have its fulfillment is as completely ",[17,531,532],{},"hidden"," \"from the wise and prudent\" of this time as it was from the wise and prudent at the time of Christ's ",[17,535,536],{},"first"," coming. Now, if the ",[17,539,540],{},"prophecies"," relating to ",[17,543,544],{},"earthly"," matters of ",[17,547,548],{},"this time"," are so utterly misunderstood by the wise and \"prudent\" ",[17,551,552],{},"men,"," shall we wonder that but ",[17,555,556],{},"few"," will see the grandeur and ",[17,559,169],{}," of \"THIS ",[17,562,563],{},"salvation\" until"," the accumulation of evidence shall be ",[17,566,409],{}," that the \"sons of God\" shall be MANIFEST?",[13,569,570,571,574,575,577,578,581,582,585,586,20],{},"Some of our former friends may think we are not very prudent nor modest because \"we use great plainness of speech,\" and may be ready to say: \"No doubt ye are the men, and wisdom will die with you,\" to which we would reply that the wisdom spoken of above, and that God by the mouth of the prophet said should perish, the wisdom of ",[17,572,573],{},"this"," world (age) ",[17,576,372],{}," died with ",[17,579,580],{},"us;"," we have no reputation for such wisdom and make no pretensions to it.
